Milestone Achieved in Europe’s Largest Energy Storage Facility of Sungrow

Published

on

Sungrow, a global leader in solar energy inverters and energy storage technologies, has announced the successful grid integration of the 400 MWh first phase of Europe’s largest energy storage project. Upon completion, the project will meet the electricity needs of approximately 96,000 households and represent a critical step in Europe’s green energy transition.

According to BloombergNEF data, Sungrow, the most reliable provider of solar energy inverters and energy storage solutions in the global market, continues to implement strategic projects across Europe.

The first phase of the facility, located in Vilvoorde, Belgium, and owned by energy giant ENGIE, has been completed and connected to the grid with a total capacity of 800 MWh, commencing energy production.

Consisting of 320 liquid-cooled PowerTitan units, the facility is characterized as a significant milestone in the modernization of Europe’s energy infrastructure within the framework of the continent’s 2050 sustainability vision.

The facility will store excess energy during high production periods and feed it back to the grid during peak demand hours, ensuring uninterrupted continuity of electricity generated from renewable sources.

Serving as a model for the effective integration of renewable energy with existing infrastructure, the facility will maintain grid balance and reduce network congestion issues.

Upon completion, the project will supply clean and reliable electricity to approximately 96,000 homes, with the second and final phase targeted for commissioning by the end of 2025.

“Battery storage is the backbone of energy transformation”

Moritz Rolf, Vice President responsible for Sungrow’s European operations, made the following assessment on the subject:

“Battery storage technology is one of the most vital yet often overlooked components of energy transformation. This project clearly demonstrates how Sungrow technology meets the grid flexibility needed for Europe’s renewable energy journey. The strategic partnership we’ve developed with ENGIE at the Vilvoorde facility emphasizes the critical role of battery storage in the transition to clean energy and strengthens our commitment to the European market.”

Safe, Smart, and Efficient Energy Storage Technology

Sungrow’s PowerTitan units are being used in both phases of the ENGIE project. Thanks to its compact architecture, the system provides rapid installation and high space efficiency, offering significant advantages in large-scale infrastructure investments.

The liquid-cooled smart technology delivers superior performance in thermal management, safety, and cost efficiency. These features enable the safe and sustainable integration of large-capacity energy storage systems into the grid.

Vincent Verbeke, CEO of ENGIE Belgium, stated: “With the commissioning of the first battery group in Vilvoorde, ENGIE has secured a significant portion of the additional flexibility needed to balance the grid’s supply and demand. The successful execution of this project was made possible through strong partnerships. Working together with reliable and innovative partners like Sungrow, we will continue to accelerate the grid integration of renewable energy and deliver a more reliable, sustainable, and economical energy system.”

Sungrow has a strong regional presence in Europe with offices in 25 countries including Turkey, 26 warehouses, 22 service centers, and 2 R&D centers. The company manages technical support, sales, and after-sales services directly from the region, providing fast and effective solutions to its partners’ needs.
