In the competitive world of large-scale manufacturing, floor space comes at a premium. Yet the demand for robust, high-performance machining centers continues to grow. Mecof’s latest Powermill G3 PC3 gantry milling machine addresses this challenge head-on, proving that compact dimensions need not compromise capability.

Recently installed for an Italian general mechanics manufacturer, the Powermill G3 PC3 represents a new generation of intelligent production equipment that combines structural integrity with digital connectivity. The machine demonstrates how modern manufacturing technology can deliver industrial-scale performance while respecting spatial constraints.

Engineering for Performance

The Powermill G3 PC3’s specifications reveal its serious production credentials. With axis travels of 8,000 mm in X, 4,500 mm in Y, and 1,500 mm in Z, the machine accommodates substantial workpieces. The work surface measures 8,000 x 3,000 mm and supports loads up to 15,000 kg/m² (class II DIN 876), providing the stability essential for demanding machining operations.

At the core of the machine sits a universal bi-rotary head featuring automatic millesimal positioning. The 38 kW spindle delivers 615 Nm of torque at speeds reaching 6,000 rpm, with ISO 50 tool attachment. This configuration enables everything from aggressive roughing operations to precision finishing work within a single setup.

Tool management comes via a 60-position chain tool changer mounted to the crossbeam shoulder. The sliding exchange arm design ensures rapid, reliable tool changes that minimize non-productive time. The system allows tool exchange with the spindle positioned horizontally, streamlining the process further.

Integrated Systems Approach

Mecof has equipped the Powermill G3 PC3 with comprehensive auxiliary systems designed for continuous production environments. Chip evacuation utilizes longitudinally arranged ramp conveyors for efficient material removal. The dual cooling system provides delivery both near the spindle (6 bar pressure, 28 l/min flow rate) and through the spindle (20 bar pressure, 20 l/min flow rate) for tools with central coolant capability.

Supporting these systems are dedicated collection and filtering tanks, each with 1,000-liter capacity. A multi-stage cartridge filtration system progressively cleans coolant to 60 µm and then 30 µm, extending both coolant life and tool performance.

Process monitoring incorporates a Renishaw RMP60 radio measurement probe along with kinematic measurement capabilities, enabling in-process verification and adaptive control.

Digital Integration

The machine runs on Heidenhain’s TNC 640 HSCI numerical control, complemented by the manufacturer’s Industry 4.0 options package. This includes TNC Remo for remote program loading, DNC for automated factory logistics integration, and CAPR adaptive control functionality.

A wireless HR 550 FS remote control panel provides operational flexibility, while Heidenhain software options support advanced capabilities including virtual axis configuration and five-axis machining with RTCP (Rotation Tool Center Point).

These digital features transform the Powermill G3 PC3 from a standalone machine tool into a networked production asset capable of full integration with enterprise manufacturing systems.

Market Positioning

The Powermill G3 PC3 targets manufacturers requiring large-component machining capability but facing facility space limitations. The machine’s combination of substantial working envelope, heavy-duty construction, and Industry 4.0 connectivity addresses the needs of job shops, contract manufacturers, and OEMs working with large fabrications.

As manufacturing continues its digital transformation, equipment like the Powermill G3 PC3 demonstrates that advanced capability, compact design, and intelligent connectivity can coexist in practical production solutions.
